We are seeking a Distinguished Scientist to lead key, mission-driven science and technology initiatives in the field of nuclear emergency response. As a Distinguished Scientist at MSTS's Remote Sensing Laboratory (RSL), you will contribute to core strategic vision for the nuclear emergency response mission, construct science and technology roadmaps to implement that vision, and foster overall innovation and capability maturation through mentorship of our technical staff. In execution of these tasks, regular engagement with federal sponsors, interagency partners, and other NNSA collaborators within the complex will be required. Successful candidates must demonstrate a track record of progressive technical leadership throughout their career and demonstrable examples of leadership spanning the continuum from strategic planning to field delivery. Experience and in-depth knowledge in the field of nuclear emergency response is highly desired. | With two sites located on Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, NV, and Joint Base Andrews located in Maryland, the RSL is a key execution arm for the NNSA's Counterterrorism And Counterproliferation mission. In this capacity, the RSL mantains 24x7/365 deployable support for nuclear response activities. In pursuit of this misssion, RSL staff deploy domestically and internationally, maintain a vigorous training regimen, develop and maintain a specialized scientific toolset, and work tirelessly in preparation for the next nuclear emergency. This position will provide multi-faceted technical leadership in this domain to ensure progressive innovation of the underlying technical toolset, while concurrently fostering the technical workforce culture required to progress, maintain, and deploy it. | This position will work collaboratively with MSTS program managers from six distinct deployable assets to deliver overarching, cross-cutting, and innovative technical strategy across the RSL technical workforce. In pursuit of these objectives, regular engagement with technical staff, project leads, and program managers will be required. In addition, successful candidates must be willing and able to serve deployable duty. | As a senior technical leader at the RSL, this position will also provide an interace to the MSTS Science and Technology Thrust Area (STTA) leads. In this role, you will work to align RSL strategic vision with STTA sectors, thereby leveraging company-wide expertise and promoting broad collaboration and technical depth throughout MSTS. Additional or specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: | - Define cutting-edge concepts that promote technological development and advance the nation's nuclear emergency response preparedness. | - Conceive, plan, and conduct pioneering work in radiation detection and quantification for nuclear emergency response. | - Champion and enable new approaches to technological innovation in development of sensor data fusion, artificial intelligence, and machine learning for nuclear emergency response. | - Exercise a high degree of originality and sound judgment in formulating, evaluating, and correlating broad engineering and scientific technologies. | - Develop strategies to solve long-standing technical challenges in disparate sensor data assimilation and uncertainty quantification. | - Develop and author strategy documents with actionable milestones for the RSL Director. | - Develop, define, and modify strategic research objectives in the course of planning and conducting innovative work. | - Execute strategies to retain core capabilities in nuclear emergency response and related technical areas. Mentor new employees and build high-performing teams capable of meeting technological challenges. Provide leadership to enhance a “workforce pipeline” (e.g., with universities and industry) to ensure an enduring and viable workforce. | - Promote and maintain strong customer relationships with respect to meeting commitments. Develop lasting partnerships with sponsors from the Department of Energy (DOE)/National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and other federal agencies to understand national requirements. | - Use Earned Value Management System knowledge and techniques to effectively lead and manage project work. | - Provide quality service by maintaining quality and customer service standards, analyzing, and resolving quality and customer service problems, identifying trends, and recommending improvements. | - Ensure that work is done safely. Follow all environment, safety, and health standards, and promote a culture of safety, health, and well-being. | - Keep up to date with the technical literature and stay informed about the latest developments in the research field. Publish and present research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and at external conferences, seminars, and technical meetings. | - Travel as necessary to interact with collaborators, sponsors, and customers and conduct experiments. | - Advise management on technology utilization and development. | - Provide guidance to senior management regarding strategic development opportunities for new technologies and capabilities.

We are looking for a Principal Scientist candidate to work within the Physical Sciences Division of the NNSS’ Science and Technology Directorate. We are seeking a highly motivated scientist who will work in a team environment to solve national security problems. This position will involve all aspects of the project’s life-cycle from initial proposal development to final reporting. In addition to performing technical work, the candidate will provide technical direction and assign work to scientists, engineers, technicians and others who assist on specific assignments. This scientist will collaborate with partner labs throughout the DOE infrastructure and academia and serve as subject matter experts on research and development projects. They will create technical reports and present findings to USG stakeholders and customers. |   | Key Responsibilities | - Work as a Principal Investigator proposing, developing, testing and delivering novel systems in support of national security objectives. | - Perform wide range of simulation, design and experimental tasks. | - Lead small project teams (including tasking and budgets) and report deliverables directly to sponsors and collaborators. | - Work with other senior staff to conduct experiments for a diverse array of real-world applications. | - Travel to participate in field experiments and project meetings. | - Focus on the most complex projects with the broadest technical scope, requiring interdisciplinary and interagency coordination. | - Set priorities and standards for research, data compilation and data analysis. | - Carry out special or unique studies requiring unconventional or novel approaches and techniques. | - Serve as an expert resource, consultant, and advisor both internally and to other organizations. | - Develop new initiatives and technical capabilities for the company. | - Advise management on technology utilization and development.
