Join an innovative team conducting groundbreaking research in defense of our nation. The Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) is seeking outstanding candidates for a Distinguished Engineer for the Global Controls System supporting the Scorpius Accelerator. The Advanced Sources and Detectors (ASD) Project consists of the development of Scorpius, a multiple-pulse, single-axis linear induction accelerator radiographic system. The radiographic system will be used to study the late time stages of implosions involving sub-critical quantities of special nuclear material within the PULSE tunnel complex at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). Scorpius requires a robust control system to operate the machine safely and collect the data needed to execute this important national security mission. The successful candidate will: | - Work with the NNSS Controls Team Lead and the ASD Global Controls (GC) Technical Lead to provide leadership in developing and implementing network architecture and data management system across the radiographic system that is consistent with implementation of machine learning protocols. | Provide leadership in integrating and managing software and in standardization of hardware. | - Work closely with contractors and technical leads for the Accelerator, Injector, Downstream Transport, Solid State Pulsed Power, and Detector subsystems to develop robust and reliable controls system. | - Work with NNSS Controls Team Lead and NNSS Information Technology to ensure the global control system is compliant with cybersecurity requirements. | Collaborate with NNSS Controls Team Lead to develop strategic plans for managing software updates, hardware improvements, and configuration control for both software and hardware. | - Perform as the interface between the NNSS Controls team lead and project leadership by communicating project requirements and ensuring proper implementation. | - Partner with the NNSS Controls Team Lead and ASD GC Technical Lead to support ASD NNSS project management by: | - Providing background information for cost and schedule variance justifications, and developing necessary recovery plans | - Identifying opportunities for new scope and budget, and providing technical descriptions for accompanying proposals | - Providing status updates and forecasts to inform accurate completion estimates | - Preparing necessary information for ASD project review presentations. | | - Frequent travel to Los Alamos and Albuquerque with occasional travel to California (Livermore) is expected.

Key Responsibilities | - Install, configure, troubleshoot, and maintain vacuum systems associated with multiple regions of the Scorpius accelerator. | - Work as part of a team of engineers, physicists, and technologists from the labs and the NNSS to install and operate Scorpius and possibly Z-pinch Experiment Underground System (ZEUS), high-energy x-ray and neutron generating devices, along with associated diagnostics systems and detector systems. | - Collaborate with multiple internal and external organizations to install, align, operate, and commission subsystems of the overall Scorpius accelerator in North Las Vegas and NNSS forward areas. | - Collaborate with outside vendor to operate high voltage pulsers to test and characterize accelerator modules in Area 6 of the NNSS prior to final installation at PULSE. | - Experience in the use of basic and powered hand tools, must have a working knowledge of a variety of laboratory instrumentation such as digitizing storage, DVMs, and oscilloscopes. | - Frequent travel to New Mexico to assemble, test, and align cells and modules of the Scorpius linear induction accelerator ultimately being installed at the Principal Underground Laboratory for Subcritical Experiments (PULSE) at the NNSS. | - Frequent travel to the NNSS forward areas will be required (approximately 30 miles beyond the Mercury gate). | - Perform other duties assigned by Management.
