Responsibilities

THIS IS A CASUAL POSITION WORKING A MAXIMUM OF 900 HOURS PER CALENDAR YEAR.

 

Undergraduate Engineering Interns will work under the direct supervision of a manager & mentor and will be provided with hands-on participation in ongoing projects at one of the most unique experimental sites in the United States, or one of our outlying location sites. 

 

Internships are available at the following locations:

 

  • Mercury, Nevada (Area 23 - Base Camp - 65 miles north of Las Vegas)

 

We are looking for qualified and motivated Undergrad students that are pursuing a degree in:

  • Electrical Engineering
  • Nuclear Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Fire Protection Engineering
  • Software Engineering

Duties and Responsibilities (may include and will vary depending on which department you are assigned to):

  • Support research on systems.
  • Perform document reviews and updates.
  • Create Facility Change Requests to implement desired changes to various systems.
  • Day-to-Day activities will center mostly on data collection. Type of data to be gathered will dependon the project/assignment.
  • Redline drawings for mechanical systems for each building. 

The intern will learn how engineering can influence the reliability, availability, and maintainability of 'assets' or equipment we maintain.This will include documentation and maintenance of asset information, data collection and data maintenance, and depending on time, analysis of asset data for FMEA/criticality analysis. The intern will also learn how different departments are needed to accomplish the goal of maximizing the reliability of assets.

  • May 20th, 2025 - Summer internship Student Program begins
  • August 8th, 2025 - Summer internship Student Program concludes

 

Qualifications

Due to the nature of our work, US Citizenship is required for all positions.

  • Completion of first year Bachelor’s degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), as of the date application is submitted
    • or Completion of first year in a Calculus-based STEM bachelor’s degree in engineering, as of the date application is submitted.
  • Must be actively enrolled in school, as of the date application is submitted.
  • Must have and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, as of the date application is submitted.
  • Must be located in the contiguous United States.
  • Must have:
    • Planning/organizing skills and initiative
    • Good written and verbal communication skills
    • Basic knowledge of engineering equipment, software, systems, calculations, and applications of engineering methods.
    • Have self-motivating attitude and is open to exploring all areas of engineering.
    • Ability to follow directions, both written and verbal, and able to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Strong computer skills are desired, including MS Office and computer programming.
  • A pre-placement drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.

Ability to obtain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification credential under the Department of Energy Order 206.2, ‘Identity, Credential, and Access Management,’ and Supplemental Directive NNSA SD 206.2, ‘Implementation of Personal Identity Verification for Uncleared Contractors.’

Hourly range for this position is $15.00 - $28.99.

 

Starting salary is determined based on the position market value, the individual candidate education and experience and internal equity.
