Responsibilities

THIS IS A CASUAL POSITION WORKING A MAXIMUM OF 900 HOURS PER CALENDAR YEAR.

 

The Infrastructure Senior Directorate is looking for students interested in a fast-paced, exciting summer intern opportunity to support our major improvement initiatives. Infrastructure is responsible for providing the physical infrastructure required to support leading edge scientific research and development at the Nevada National Security Site, a federal site located 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas and the size of the State of Rhode Island. The team plans, designs, and builds new buildings, roads, and utilities while maintaining the existing infrastructure.

Infrastructure has 6 directorates: Enterprise Infrastructure Programs, Project Planning & Delivery, Engineering, Construction, Maintenance & Critical Site Infrastructure, and Essential Site Services. Interns will be assigned to a directorate based on their education and interests, as well as company needs. We provide opportunities to work with and connect with other organizations within the company. Each intern will be under the direction of a Manager & Mentor and will complete an end of summer project presentation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Interns will be assigned to a department based on their education and interests, as well as company needs. Scope will be determined prior to the start of the internship. Specific duties and responsibilities will be assigned in coordination with the intern’s manager.

Infrastructure interns in recent years have worked on:

  • Developed plans for construction projects early in the project lifecycle
  • Performed walkdowns of facilities in the North Las Vegas office, as well as the Nevada National Security Site
  • Coordinated the implementation of a mobile maintenance system
  • Designed processes for NNSS real estate based on federal requirements and guidelines
  • Performed fire protection analysis
  • Planned solar photovoltaic and EV charging projects
  • Supported design of infrastructure projects

  • May 20th, 2025 - Summer internship Student Program begins
  • August 8th, 2025 - Summer internship Student Program concludes

Qualifications

Due to the nature of our work, US Citizenship is required for all positions.

  • Completion of first year Bachelor’s degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) for Civil, Mechanical, Industrial and General Engineering degrees at the time of application.
    • or Completion of first year in a Calculus-based STEM bachelor’s degree in engineering.
    • or Completion of first year Bachelor's degree in Business Management, Project Management, Construction Management, Facility Management, Architecture, Real Estate or Data Analytics at an accredited institution. 
  • Must be actively enrolled in school, as of the date application is submitted.
  • Must have and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, as of the date application is submitted.
  • Must be located in the contiguous United States.
  • Must have:
    • Planning/organizing skills and initiative
    • Good written and verbal communication skills
    • Basic knowledge of engineering equipment, software, systems, calculations, and applications of engineering methods.
    • Have self-motivating attitude and is open to exploring all areas of engineering.
    • Ability to follow directions, both written and verbal, and able to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Strong computer skills are desired, including MS Office and computer programming.
  • A pre-placement drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • The primary work location will be at the Nevada National Security Site (located 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada) or the Losee Road facility in North Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ability to obtain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification credential under the Department of Energy Order 206.2, ‘Identity, Credential, and Access Management,’ and Supplemental Directive NNSA SD 206.2, ‘Implementation of Personal Identity Verification for Uncleared Contractors.’

Hourly range for this position is $15.00 - $28.99.

 

Starting salary is determined based on the position market value, the individual candidate education and experience and internal equity.
