Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, troubleshoot, and maintain vacuum systems associated with multiple regions of the Scorpius accelerator.
  • Work as part of a team of engineers, physicists, and technologists from the labs and the NNSS to install and operate Scorpius and possibly Z-pinch Experiment Underground System (ZEUS), high-energy x-ray and neutron generating devices, along with associated diagnostics systems and detector systems.
  • Collaborate with multiple internal and external organizations to install, align, operate, and commission subsystems of the overall Scorpius accelerator in North Las Vegas and NNSS forward areas.
  • Collaborate with outside vendor to operate high voltage pulsers to test and characterize accelerator modules in Area 6 of the NNSS prior to final installation at PULSE.
  • Experience in the use of basic and powered hand tools, must have a working knowledge of a variety of laboratory instrumentation such as digitizing storage, DVMs, and oscilloscopes.
  • Frequent travel to New Mexico to assemble, test, and align cells and modules of the Scorpius linear induction accelerator ultimately being installed at the Principal Underground Laboratory for Subcritical Experiments (PULSE) at the NNSS.
  • Frequent travel to the NNSS forward areas will be required (approximately 30 miles beyond the Mercury gate).
  • Perform other duties assigned by Management.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in field related to the position plus at least 5 years progressive related experience or High School diploma plus 7 years progressive related experience.
  • Experience with vacuum systems, including leak detection techniques, is recommended.
  • Experience with electrical components, circuitry, the building up and hand wiring of circuit boards, soldering, AC/DC electronics, basic hand tools, electronic test and measurement equipment, and basic electronic troubleshooting.
  • Experience working in a team environment that includes scientist, engineers, technicians, and designers.
  • Experience using standard office software products.
  • Must be competent in basic electronic work and optical work including Fiber optics.
  • Ability to work underground is required.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision in a dynamic multidisciplinary project environment with simultaneous commitments to performance, cost, and schedule.
  • Ability to effectively deal with pressures of deadlines and multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work well with others, as this position will regularly interface with team members, other teams and outside organizations.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, work independently, and work as part of a team.
  • Ability to execute work in a disciplined manner to demonstrate compliance with laws, codes, orders, and MSTS policies and procedures.
  • The primary work location will be in the forward areas at the Nevada National Security Site (forward areas are approximately 90 miles from North Las Vegas) with some work occasionally performed at the Losee Road facility in North Las Vegas, Nevada. The PULSE facility is located in the forward areas of the NNSS.
  • Work schedule for this position will be 4/10’s, Monday – Thursday (subject to change).
  • Limited travel is required.
  • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license. 

MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. In addition, Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship, at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2, “Personnel Security”. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

 

Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted.  Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, required to participate in subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709, “Counterintelligence Evaluation Program.”

Hourly range for this position is: $32.93 - $49.40.


Starting salary is determined based on the position market value, the individual candidate education and experience and internal equity.
