Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide scientific expertise and leadership as an accelerator scientist at the NNSS Los Alamos Office (LAO), working with a team of scientists, engineers, and technicians.
  • Operate, maintain, and upgrade a small RF linear accelerator at LAO.
  • Work with and support a variety of technical teams that use the LAO linac for diagnostic characterization and other R&D efforts.
  • Lead a team in the design, assembly, and fielding of new beam diagnostics for other accelerator facilities, including the DARHT and LANSCE accelerators and Los Alamos National Laboratory, the FXR accelerator at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and the Scorpius accelerator, currently being constructed at the NNSS.
  • Travel to experimental facilities within the DOE Complex is required.
  • Model accelerator beams and related diagnostics and analyze experimental data.
  • Prepare reports and oral presentations, including peer reviewed journal publications, as appropriate.
  • Will be required to provide leadership and work well in a dynamic and multi-disciplinary framework in close collaboration with scientists, engineers, and technicians across disciplines, organizations, and geographic locations to develop innovative solutions to customer needs.
  • Work independently as well as in a team environment, and mentor early career colleagues as required.
  • Serve as a role model for effective and creative technical leadership within the company.


  • Bachelor’s degree in calculus-based technical (STEM) field plus at least 5 years relevant experience. Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge. Graduate research experience may be recognized.

  • Master's degree in Physics plus at least three year's relevant experience, or a Ph.D. in Physics preferred.
  • The candidate should have some combination of the following skills: knowledge of accelerator and beam physics, experience operating and maintaining accelerators, experience designing, building, and fielding accelerator diagnostics, experience with field deployments to remote facilities, experience with beam models and simulations, ability to interface with customers to identify and define new experimental requirements, presentation and publications of experimental efforts, ability to share background and experience in a mentorship role, experience as a team lead for R&D efforts and/or experimental campaigns.
  • Will be self-motivated and able to complete assigned tasks and projects with minimal supervision. This individual should have strong time-management skills, be well organized, maintain safe work habits, and have a broad range of technical interests and education.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate critical thinking, good judgement, clear sense of purpose, attention to detail, accountability for deliverables, and demonstrated project management skills.
  • Must have demonstrated the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated skill to establish and maintain strong and effective customer relations, and to anticipate change and adjust promptly and effectively.
  • Must possess the skills to promote an open and informal communications environment and develop mutual trust and teamwork.
  • The primary work location will be at the Los Alamos Operations located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.Travel to experimental facilities within the DOE Complex is required.
  • Work schedule for this position will be 4/10’s, Monday – Thursday (subject to change).
  • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
  • Must possess an appropriate, valid driver’s license.


MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. In addition, Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship, at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2, “Personnel Security”. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.


Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted.  Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, required to participate in subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709, “Counterintelligence Evaluation Program.”
