    Responsibilities

    Key Responsibilities

    • Support the LAO Optical Engineering and Dynamic Experiments Team (X142) in diagnostic instrumentation development and experimental physics field support activities.
    • Contributes to design, fabrication, assembly, and characterization of diagnostic systems based on optical and imaging technologies as well as laser based technologies.
    • Provide field support for weapons physics experiments and small-scale focused experiments conducted at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) and at Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratories.
    • May serve as a subject matter expert in science and engineering field to other colleagues and customers.
    • Work as part of a small diagnostic development team.
    • Develops devise appropriate test plans.
    • Support system development with performance testing, data analysis and documentation.
    • Assist in verifying system qualifications in terms performance in meeting requirements, evaluating subcomponent parts such as mechanical assemblies, optical designs, imaging performance, data recording requirements, instrumentation control, and data analysis.
    • Work effectively as an independent researcher as well as function inclusively and with integrity in a team environment.
    • Contributes to developing solutions of challenging and complex technical problems.
    • May work within project teams having well-defined work scope and deliverables.
    • Good communicator, willing and able to present results successfully to stakeholders and as a scientist/engineering professional.
    • System deployment and field support to off-site experimental facilities. Some travel to such locations will be required.
    • Accept individual responsibility and accountability for environment, safety, health, and quality processes within personal control, personal safety, and the safety of co-workers.
    • Comply with established regulations and procedures for environment, safety, health, and quality and perform duties in a way that will not cause personal danger, endanger other individuals, or violate environment, safety, health, and quality regulations.
    • Promptly correct or report any hazard or potential hazard to supervision. Understand the principles associated with the MSTS safety concept
    • Participate in and embrace MSTS environment, safety, health, and quality initiatives.

    Qualifications

    Due to the nature of our work, US Citizenship is required for all positions.

    • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). 
    • Knowledge of engineering and physics principles, familiar with science and engineering instrumentation.
    • Experience with system assembly and benchtop testing, and the ability to troubleshoot electronic systems, optical systems, laser based systems, and photonic instrumentation is highly desired. As is familiarity and general use of laboratory testing equipment.
    • Should be self-motivated and able to complete assigned tasks and projects with minimal supervision. This individual should have strong time-management skills, be well organized, maintain safe work habits.
    • Practical experience with photonic based hardware and software, good computer skills including experience with analysis programs, possess ability to readily engage and evaluate new technologies and techniques, attention to detail, accountability for deliverables is highly desirable.
    • Good written and verbal communication skills are required.
    • Must have demonstrated the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
    • Demonstrated skill to establish and maintain strong and effective customer relations.
    • Must be people sensitive and possess the skills to promote an open and informal communications environment and develop mutual trust and teamwork.
    • Knowledge of Department of Energy and National Nuclear Security Administration orders.
    • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
    • Must have valid driver's license.

     

    Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted.  Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, and subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709, “Counterintelligence Evaluation Program.

     

    Eligibility Requirements – To obtain a clearance, an individual must be a U.S. citizen at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2, “Personnel Security.”
