  • Qualifications

    Due to the nature of our work, US Citizenship is required for all positions.

    • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), plus at least 2 years' relevant experience.
    • Master's degree preferred.
    • Knowledge of general and specific safety practices for pulsed power and radiation generating devices, especially neutron sources.
    • Working knowledge of analytical instruments and diagnostic systems for stockpile stewardship applications and experiments.
    • Mastery of theoretical and experimental engineering and scientific practices and a significant background in research, development, testing, and evaluation, with a focus on complex diagnostic systems used in or designed for sub-critical experiments.
    • Must have excellent oral/written communications skills.
    • Must possess planning/organizing skills and initiative, and be capable of employing independent judgment and knowledge to ensure that requirements are completed efficiently and on time.
    • Must be able to effectively deal with pressures of deadlines and multiple tasks. 
    • Demonstrated leadership qualities with emphasis on continuous improvement and team building.
    • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
    • Must have a valid driver’s license.

    Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted. Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, and subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709, “Counterintelligence Evaluation Program.”

    Eligibility Requirements – To obtain a clearance, an individual must be a U.S. citizen at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2, “Personnel Security.”

    Responsibilities

    Provide engineering system design and field support for Control Systems supporting physics experiments within Test and Evaluation's Nevada Operations. 

    • Independently perform complex engineering assignments demanding contributions calling for the application of specialized and or advanced engineering principles at the conceptual level and professional resourcefulness. 
    • Provide support for the design, development, and fielding of custom hardware/software solutions for the Diagnostic Research and Materials Studies group, providing additional support to Site-Directed Research and Development projects.
    • Projects will be used in support of experiments conducted at the Nevada National Security Site and at Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories in support of the Stockpile Stewardship and Site-Directed Research and Development programs. 
    • Provide fielding support as needed for diagnostic and control systems in national laboratories experiments. 
    • Maintain and develop relationships with national laboratory customers at various levels (primarily scientists, engineers, and technicians). 
    • Perform technical work and provide the necessary operational and technical direction to technicians producing hardware and software products originating from customer orders.
    • Assist in the requirements, design, development, and implementation of Control Systems for Dense Plasma Focus (DPF) pulsed neutron generators, at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) and in North Las Vegas, including mega-amp class machines used in Stockpile Stewardship applications and research and development of man-portable DPF machines.
    • This includes working with NNSS and National Laboratory researchers to set control system requirements, then design and develop appropriate control systems to meet the established requirements.
    • Work location will be North Las Vegas.  Work assignments will also require work at the Nevada National Security Site, Los Alamos, NM and Livermore, CA
