    • Prefer more than 20 years of experience in seismic network operation.
    • Understanding of modern seismic network acquisition software and hardware.
    • Understanding of cultural, biological and environmental regulations associated with seismic hardware deployments and operations.
    • Understanding of real-time data telemetry.
    • Demonstrated results in collaborating with national weapons laboratory scientists to deliver seismic data and meta-data for research and development studies.
    • Demonstrated experience leading teams to success with strict budgets and schedules.
    • Able to develop plans for solving the most difficult problems.
    • Job requires physical exertion that includes significant outdoor activity, including walking up slopes while carrying equipment.
    • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted.  Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, and subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709, “Counterintelligence Evaluation Program.

Eligibility Requirements – To obtain a clearance, an individual must be a U.S. citizen at least 18 years of age. Responsibilities

Senior Principal Scientist will be assigned as the Seismic Network Operator for the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). The NNSS operates a network of permanent seismic stations to constantly monitor the background natural seismicity of southern Nevada. In addition, the NNSS supports experimentation that requires hundreds of temporary seismic and acoustic stations deployed for specific research and development (R&D) missions. The Senior Principal Scientist will report to the Test and Experimentation Mission Readiness Division Manager and have the responsibility for maintenance, operation and expansion of the seismic network at the NNSS. The specific job tasks include:

    • Inventory and manage all NNSS seismic equipment (accelerometers, seismometers, infra-sound sensors, digitizers, global position systems, solar power systems, 500 nodal seismic system, etc.).
    • Perform upgrades to equipment as required.
    • Ensure compliance requirements and documents are developed and maintained for seismic network operating locations.
    • Expand the seismic network by finding new locations for seismic stations, procuring new hardware and working with NNSS construction resources to build and install the seismic station.
    • Conduct quarterly maintenance of all network seismic stations.
    • Monitor the real-time operation of the NNSS network to ensure rapid response to solve station data outages.
    • Team with the University of Nevada-Reno (UNR) to ensure real-time telemetry of the data is maintained and data are archived at either UNR or University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
    • Collaborate with NNSS Program Managers to develop the yearly operating budget for the network and then execute to that budget.
    • Support National Laboratory experimentation at the NNSS. Candidate will develop relationships with experimentalists that require R&D solutions involving seismic and acoustic data collection and analysis.
    • Serve as Diagnostic Coordinator for predominantly seismic experiments at the NNSS (e.g., Source Physics Experiments, Physics Experiment 1, etc.).
    • Develop test plans to manage temporary experimental deployments across the NNSS.
    • Provide frequent status reports as required to communicate emerging issues and project successes with division and program management.
    • Prepare and present monthly seismic network status and financial reports to MSTS management.
    • Promote a safety culture to all visiting scientists that work on the NNSS seismic network and actively participate in the MSTS Beyond Zero safety concept.
    • Demonstrate continuous improvement by documentation of lessons learned or participating in improvement initiatives.
