The Nevada National Security Site's New Mexico Operations (NMO) is an applied-science and engineering organization engaged in research, analysis, testing and field operations for the Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, other national labs, and the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS).


Key Responsibilities

  • Work as a member of a small team designing, assembling, testing, and fielding complex and novel diagnostic systems such as high-speed multi-framing imaging camera design.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and technical resource and advisor to other scientists, engineers, and managers on technical issues relevant to your areas of subject matter expertise.
  • Provide technical leadership including design and performance guidance on electronic and software design activities.
  • Work with team members to devise appropriate test plans to evaluate system components, systems, and mechanical assemblies.
  • Work with team members to inform and guide imaging performance and instrument control software.
  • Provide system qualification in areas of electronic and optoelectronic performance of diagnostic systems.
  • Work independently as a subject matter expert in relevant fields of study as well as in a team environment requiring communication with other groups to develop solutions for all projects.
  • Must be able to confidently present results to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Utilize working knowledge of laboratory instrumentation such as digitizing storage oscilloscopes, delay generators, digital multi-meters, high-bandwidth links, metrology instrumentation, and other test and measurement equipment to test, characterize, and field custom designed diagnostic systems.
  • Utilize basic and powered hand tools for instrumentation chassis assembly and construction.
  • Utilize soldering and industry workmanship standards in electronic and mechanical assembly and documentation tasks.
  • Be a senior mentor to less experienced engineers, scientists, and technicians while working as part of a small development team.


  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), plus at least 5 years’ relevant experience. 
  • Develop software or firmware towards the design of diagnostic equipment used in physics experiments.
  • Embedded applications and/or microprocessor programming using object oriented programming languages such as C, C#, or C++.
  • Intimate knowledge of FPGA programming and VHDL with Zilinx and/or Altera are highly desired and will be given preference.
  • A high-level working knowledge of ARM microcontrollers and processors are highly desired.
  • Working knowledge of implementing digital signal processing (DSP) in programmable logic is highly desired and will be given preference.
  • Knowledge in AI programming, GPU programming, and intimate knowledge of registers, interrupts, and low-level digital signal processing are highly desired and will be given preference.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to complete tasks with minimal or no supervision.
  • Must have strong time-management skills, be well organized, and have safe work habits.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills are required for this position.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking, good judgement, a clear sense of purpose, attention to detail, accountability for deliverables, and is ready and eager to engage in new technologies and techniques.
  • Must have excellent computer skills including knowledge of design and analysis software programs.
  • Must be able to work closely with professionals having knowledge and skills in numerous technology areas.
  • Must be willing and able to travel as required by the job.
  • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted.  Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, and subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709, “Counterintelligence Evaluation Program.


Eligibility Requirements – To obtain a clearance, an individual must be a U.S. citizen at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2, “Personnel Security.”
