  • Qualifications

    • Associate degree plus at least 18 years’ progressive related experience or High School diploma plus 20 years’ progressive related experience.
    • Proficiency with all tool room machines required.
    • Familiarity with CAD systems and micro machining techniques desired.  
    • Direct, hands-on machinist experience, and the ability to hold close tolerances for prototype parts.    
    • The ability to do innovative mechanical design in a team environment and produce prototype hardware with limited input from engineering/science staff.
    • Detail oriented, recognizing the importance of accuracy, able to work independently and/or collaboratively with engineers and scientists.
    • Demonstrates a strong ability to identify, analyze and solve problems.
    • Ability to multi-task numerous projects and conflicting priorities.
    • Effectively prioritize daily and weekly activities.
    • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
    • Must have a valid driver’s license.

    Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted.  Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, and subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709, “Counterintelligence Evaluation Program.


    Eligibility Requirements – To obtain a clearance, an individual must be a U.S. citizen at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2, “Personnel Security.”

    Successful candidate will work with a team of scientists and engineers on a dynamic testing platform.  


    Key Responsibilities

    • Produce complex mechanical assemblies (targets, projectiles, etc.) for a single stage gas launcher with tight tolerances.
    • Designs and fabricates prototype mechanical devices in support of a small team of R&D scientists and engineers.
    • Learning to operate a single stage gas launcher facility, and taking overall responsibility for operations.
    • Plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application, and modification of mechanical parts and assemblies.
    • Devises new approaches for designing and drafting complex chassis builds and mechanical assemblies.
    • Plans and conducts independent work requiring judgment and experience in the application and substantial adaptation of operations techniques.
    • Devises new approaches to operations problems.
    • May provide direction and instruction to engineers, technicians, crafts, or others in the use of configuration management/CAD software for specific projects or tasks.
    • Performs work that involves conventional practices but may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting requirements, unsuitability of conventional methods, or difficult coordination requirements.
    • Plans, guides, or prepares administrative and technical documents as required for the design and build of complex assemblies.
    • Coordinates project assignments among engineers, project managers, clients, and vendors. 
    • Applies accepted technical standards to design drawings.
    • Requires everyday collaboration with engineers, vendors, and other designers in order to make sure that design details are handled appropriately
    • Work locations will include the North Las Vegas Facility and the Nevada National Security Site
