  • Qualifications

    • Associate degree in field related to the position plus at least 8 years’ progressive related experience or High School diploma plus 10 years’ progressive related experience.
    • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
    • Proficiency with common hand tools and machine shop equipment is required. 
    • Ability to operate independently within a small R&D team is required. 
    • Mechanical design and light machining and glass and/or fiber optic polishing skills is preferred.
    • Experience with laboratory vacuum and gas distribution systems is preferred. 
    • Familiarity with basic electrical measurements, and laboratory measurements and data recording tools is preferred. 
    • Familiarity with CAD systems, CNC machines, opto-mechanical systems and micro machining techniques is preferred.
    • Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted.  Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, and subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709, “Counterintelligence Evaluation Program. Eligibility Requirements – To obtain a clearance, an individual must be a U.S. citizen at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2, “Personnel Security.”

    Responsibilities

    • Senior Technologist will assist technical team with assembly of experimental and diagnostic systems for gas gun and explosive shock physics experiments. 
    • Handle small quantities of explosives and operate a light gas gun in support of a small team of R & D scientists and engineers. 
    • Work closely with other technical team members during experimental design, assembly and execution of dynamic experiments.
    • Assist with all aspects of safety, shipping, handling, and storage of explosives.
