  • Qualifications

    Principal Scientist

    • Bachelor's degree in a Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or in a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) field, plus at least 9 years' relevant experience.
    • Must possess effective oral and written communications skills and demonstrated ability to write technical reports.
    • Must possess planning and organizing skills and initiative.
    • Must be able to employ independent judgment and apply professional knowledge to ensure that assignments are completed efficiently, accurately, and on time.
    • Must possess interpersonal communication skills to deal with contacts in an effective, positive, and professional manner.
    • Must possess mathematical skill and ability to understand complex data, terminology, procedures, laws, and regulations
    • Must have experience in software programs such as Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
    • Must be capable of performing moderate lifting.
    • Applicant must possess a valid driver's license.
    • Knowledge of industry and regulatory standards and criteria pertinent to external dosimetry, laboratory quality control, and data analysis techniques is highly desirable.
    • Experience with Panasonic dosimetry systems and related software, external dosimetry programs, and the DOELAP accreditation process is highly desirable.
    • Advanced degree and/or professional certification (Certified Health Physicist) is desired.

    Senior Principal Scientist

    • Bachelor's degree in a Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or in a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) field, plus at least 14 years' relevant experience.
    • Advanced degree and/or professional certification (Certified Health Physicist) is required.
    • Experience in external dosimetry laboratory quality control, data analysis techniques, dosimetry systems and related software, and the DOELAP accreditation process is required.
    • Must possess effective oral and written communications skills and demonstrated ability to write technical reports.
    • Must possess planning and organizing skills and initiative.
    • Must be able to employ independent judgment and apply professional knowledge to ensure that assignments are completed efficiently, accurately, and on time.
    • Must possess interpersonal communication skills to deal with contacts in an effective, positive, and professional manner.
    • Must possess mathematical skill and ability to understand complex data, terminology, procedures, laws, and regulations.
    • Must have advanced working knowledge of software programs such as Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, to include calculations, formulas, and charting expertise.
    • Must be capable of performing moderate lifting.
    • Applicant must possess a valid driver's license.

     

    For either level of position

    • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
    • Position may be cleared to Department of Energy Q Clearance. Eligibility Requirements – To obtain a clearance, an individual must be a U.S. citizen at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2, “Personnel Security.” Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted. Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, and subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709, “Counterintelligence Evaluation Program.”

    Responsibilities

     

    Key Responsibilities

     

    Principal Scientist

    • Provide support for activities necessary to obtain reaccreditation of the U.S. Department of Energy Laboratory Accreditation Program for External Dosimetry.
    • Maintain external dosimetry technical basis document, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) orders, and corporate requirements.
    • Develop methods and techniques for acquiring, analyzing, and processing radiological data.
    • Prepare a variety of technical and non-technical reports, including procedures and plans.
    • Consult with supervisors and departmental representatives on radiological control matters to ensure work procedures comply with Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) core processes, and governmental requirements.
    • Perform radiological analyses and calculations using industry available software.
    • Encouraged development and publishing in industry-standard journals.
    • Mentor Scientist and Engineering staff and technical management in radiological methods, processes, and best practices.
    • Apply knowledge and ingenuity to implement cutting edge, pioneering solutions in the technical arena.
    • Attend staff meetings, and planning and scheduling meetings relevant to radiological controls and engineering issues.
    • Conduct management assessments.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
    • Accept individual responsibility and accountability for environment, safety, health, and quality processes within personal control, personal safety, and the safety of co-workers. Comply with established regulations and procedures for environment, safety, health, and quality and perform duties in a way that will not cause personal danger, endanger other individuals, or violate environment, safety, health, and quality regulations. Promptly correct or report any hazard or potential hazard to supervision. Participate in and embrace MSTS environment, safety, health, and quality initiatives.
    • In addition to fulfilling the above basic ESH&Q obligations:
      • Must address all aspects of safety in design and execution of work.
      • Work may affect public health and safety.
      • Likely to act as a safety team lead.
      • May help formulate ESH&Q protocols.

    Senior Principal Scientist

     

    In addition to the responsibilities of the Principal Scientist position, responsibilities for the Senior Principal Scientist also include

    • Serve as Technical Lead for major projects and startups including implementation.
    • Serve as an expert advisor to other personnel and management on difficult and critical technical issues.
    • Initiate collaboration with partners external to MSTS.
    • Complete special projects to meet internal and external customer expectations.
    • In addition to fulfilling basic ESH&Q obligations listed in the Principal Scientist position:
      • Must assure that all aspects of safety have been addressed in design and execution of work.
      • Work may affect public health and safety.
      • May lead safety planning for high hazard potential projects.
      • May be designated Work Planner for other departments.
      • May help formulate ESH&Q guidelines.
