  • Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in a calculus-based Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) field and 5 year's of relevant experience.  PhD preferred.
    • Must possess knowledge of the science and mathematics of modeling imaging systems, including experience with algorithms for deterministic and statistical inverse problems, such as Hierarchical Bayesian models and Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods.
    • Employ independent judgment.
    • Apply knowledge to ensure that requirements are completed using quality methods.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
    • Must possess interpersonal communication skills to promote an open and informal communication environment, develop mutual trust and teamwork, recognize people for their accomplishments, and facilitate employee self-development. 
    • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks, changing priorities, and apply leadership concepts with an emphasis on continuous improvement and team building. 
    • Demonstrated skill to establish and maintain strong and effective customer relations, and to anticipate change and adjust promptly and effectively. 
    • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
    • Must have a valid driver’s license.

     

    Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted.  Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, and subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709, “Counterintelligence Evaluation Program.”

    Eligibility Requirements – To obtain a clearance, an individual must be a U.S. citizen at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2, “Personnel Security.”

    Responsibilities

    THIS IS A LIMITED-TERM REGULAR FULL-TIME POSITION. SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE CAN BE EMPLOYED UP TO TWO YEARS, WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF ONE ADDITIONAL YEAR, BASED ON THE ORGANINZATIONS' NEEDS. CANDIDATE MAY BE CONSIDERED FOR A POST-DOC POSITION WITHIN 3 YEARS OF RECEIVING THEIR PhD, OR THE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE COMPLETED ALL PhD REQUIREMENTS BY HIRE DATE.

     

    Reporting to the Diagnostic Research and Materials Studies Manager, within the Test & Experimentation Directorate’s Nevada Operations, the post-doctoral researcher will develop mathematical models X-ray radiography image processing, algorithms for analyzing data, participate in the fielding of diagnostic systems, and play an active role in the Site-Directed Research and Development program.

    • Will be a member of the Signal Processing and Applied Mathematics team and will play a lead scientific role in the development, fielding, and analysis of data from complex measurement systems, with a focus on basic and applied research in X-ray radiography. 
    • Requires active participation in the field with the scientific, technical, and engineering teams, direct interaction with experimental partners from the National Security Laboratories, and independently driven model and algorithm development.
    • Will build direct relationships with the laboratory partners and provide scientific guidance to experimental operations, also reporting on accomplishments to internal and external stakeholders.
    • Supporting radiography projects, the Senior Scientist will be expected to maintain an active research portfolio, participating in the Site-Directed Research and Development program, including research in support of currently projects for characterizing imaging systems, image segmentation, and image enhancement.
    • Including publishing scientific results and presenting research developments at professional meetings and conferences and to university partners.
    • The primary work location will be North Las Vegas, NV.  Work at the NNSS may be required in support of these functions, as well as travel to NNSS remote sites, and the three National Security Laboratories.
