  • Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electro-Optic Engineering or from an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), and 2 years’ related experience.
    • Must have a basic understanding of microwave systems, RF measurements, modern digitizer technology, fiber optics, and fiber laser technology. 
    • Preference is given to those with relevant background in Broadband Laser Ranging (BLR) and Photon Doppler Velocimetry (PDV) technology. 
    • Ability to interpret codes and standards within the discipline they are hired.  
    • Some travel is required for the fielding of experimental diagnostics at remote locations.  
    • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
    • Must have a valid driver’s license.


    Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted.  Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, and subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709, “Counterintelligence Evaluation Program.”


    Eligibility Requirements – To obtain a clearance, an individual must be a U.S. citizen at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2, “Personnel Security.”

    The selected applicant will work to develop technologies relevant to the National Nuclear Security Administration's Stockpile Stewardship Program. 

    • Focus areas will include the innovation of advancements for Broadband Laser Ranging (BLR) and Photon Doppler Velocimetry (PDV) technologies and their experimental application. 
    • Participate in the development of low Technology Readiness Level (TRL) innovations and transition those innovations to the field. 
    • Candidate will mentor with experts and be part of a high-performing team. 
    • Additional areas of technical exposure and development will include microwave radiation, electro-optic systems, fiber optic systems, and pulsed power technologies. 
    • Will engage in design and technical analysis activities using prescribed codes and standards, computer software, and generally accepted best management practices. 
    • The job requires technical presentations to include design reviews and technical publication in peer-reviewed journals.
