  • Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in nuclear science or in a calculus-based Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) field, and 5 years’ related experience, and progressively responsible experience in a recognized science or engineering specialty.
    • Master's degree in nuclear science plus at least three years' relevant experience, or a Ph.D. in a recognized science or engineering specialty preferred.
    • Research background in algorithms development for analyzing diagnostic data from physics experiments, in hydrodynamic modeling and simulation, uncertainty quantification, or statistical methods is highly desired, as is strong research potential, as evidenced by publications and presentations.
    • Must have an ability to critically evaluate experimental data to identify sources of error, and some knowledge of nuclear physics would be beneficial.
    • Computer programming skills, preferably in IDL or MATLAB, are required, as are excellent written and oral communication skills.
    • Must have excellent oral/written communications skills.
    • Must possess planning/organizing skills and initiative, and be capable of employing independent judgment and knowledge to ensure that requirements are completed efficiently and on time. 
    • Must be able to effectively deal with pressures of deadlines and multiple tasks. 
    • Demonstrated leadership qualities with emphasis on continuous improvement and team building.
    • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
    • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

    Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted.  Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, and subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709, “Counterintelligence Evaluation Program.”


    Eligibility Requirements – To obtain a clearance, an individual must be a U.S. citizen at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2, “Personnel Security.”

    The Senior Scientist will support the North Las Vegas Nuclear Event Analysis (NEA) team within the Diagnostic Research and Materials Studies group.  Working with a diverse team of scientists and engineers to develop innovative solutions for the analysis of legacy Underground Test (UGT) data, with a focus on research and development in statistical signal processing, image processing, inverse problems, and uncertainty quantification. 

    • Primary work responsibilities include designing physics-based models and associated algorithms for the analysis of UGT data, development of software tools for UGT analysis, and working with teams of NNSS scientists and engineers to further the analysis of data from current experimental diagnostics.
    • Coordination with project team members will be required to define the scope of work for various assignments and to integrate into other projects.
    • In addition to developing methods for analyzing UGT data, a Senior Scientist will be expected to participate in the Site-Directed Research and Development (SDRD) program, writing proposals, building diverse research teams, and contributing to other principal investigators’ SDRD projects.
    • Work assignments will also require work at the Nevada National Security Site, Los Alamos, NM and Livermore, CA.
