  • Qualifications

    • Associate degree in technical field related to the position plus at least 13 years’ progressive related experience or High School diploma plus 15 years’ progressive related experience.
    • Experience working in R&D laboratories is preferred.
    • Experience with lasers to generate x-rays, plasmas, or neutrons is preferred.
    • Experience with engineering grade CCD imaging devices, streak cameras, micro-channel plate imagers, image plates, and non-linear optics is preferred.
    • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
    • Must have a valid driver’s license


    Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted.  Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, and subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709, “Counterintelligence Evaluation Program.”


    Eligibility Requirements – To obtain a clearance, an individual must be a U.S. citizen at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2, “Personnel Security.”

    • Work with teams to provide technical support to execute project objectives related to the design, modification, and testing, troubleshooting, and procedural development of the calibration/characterization of instrumentation used in High Energy Density Physics experiments.
    • Perform duties associated with the operation and maintenance of Class 3b and Class IV laser systems relying on education and skills.  Duties will involve working with laser and laser component vendors and suppliers.
    • Plans and conducts independent work requiring judgment in the application of operations techniques. Normally uses conventional approaches to maintenance, operations, or testing problems encountered.
    • Performs work that involves conventional practices but may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting requirements, unsuitability of conventional methods, or difficult coordination requirements.
    • Ability to perform as a Laser Safety Officer; either with prior training and experience or trained in position.
    • Able to manage a project budget and schedule  laser laboratory activities, to include but not limited to operation and maintenance.
