  • Qualifications

    • Completion of the first year of an Mechanical engineering degree program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). The declared degree must pertain to the organizational unit to which the individual will be assigned.  
    • Applicant must be an actively enrolled student and provide copies of transcripts
    • Have and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on 4.0 scale
    • Fundamental understanding of 2D and 3D design.
    • Skills and abilities in mechanical engineering and basic assembly and construction principles.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Ability to accurately track project elements and write reports.
    • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
    • Must possess a valid driver's license

    Responsibilities

    • Supports Livermore Operations scientists and engineers in the engineering design process, may assist with fabricating and system control chassis and subsystems.
    • Employs established technical standards, practices and procedures when troubleshooting test units. 
    • Will be responsible for assisting in experimental setup of electronics in support of diagnostics development and calibrations.
    • Possesses a basic knowledge of operating principles, measurement standards, best practices and procedures.
    • Perform mechanical design utilizing 3D software (PROe), gaining experience in 3D design and 2D drawing production intended for fabrication of hardware.
    • Will learn and perform the duties of an entry level designer in order to communicate to a design lead.
    • Will use mechanical designs for 3D modeling and have a general understanding of 2D technical drawings, produced by a designer for an engineer. 
    • This internship is intended to build a basic understanding of a mechanical designers roles and responsibilities as well as assist in their academic progression with hands on, industry experience while early in their academic study.
    • Works under general supervision of MSTS technical staff.
    • Executes work in a disciplined manner to demonstrate compliance with MSTS policies and procedures.
    • Identifies work processes in need of improvement.
    • Independent work is reviewed for technical form and accuracy.
