  • Qualifications

    • Master's degree in mathematical or computational sciences and engineering in a calculus-based Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) field.  Applicant must be actively enrolled in school and have successfully completed a minimum of six graduate credit hours per semester toward a technical or scientific discipline. The declared degree must pertain to the organizational unit to which the individual will be assigned.
    • Have and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 on 4.0 scale
    • Experience with one or more computing programming languages or mathematical computing software packages
    • Experience conducting post-undergraduate research in areas such as material properties, seismic model development, earthquake relocations, and/or collecting of large datasets
    • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

    We are currently searching for graduate summer interns in three areas, including:


    Dynamic studies of shock waves in rock

    • Candidate will conduct research on the generation of body and surface waves from explosions in rock.  Next, he/she will examine capabilities at the NNSS to determine if gas guns could be used to shock various geologic materials and what diagnostics would be required to better understand joint loading, crack formation, and secondary wave generation from rock damage. The goal of the summer research project would be for he/she to write an Site-Directed Research and Development (SDRD) proposal for future PhD-level research.

    Earthquake Relocations in Yucca Flat

    • Candidate will conduct research to develop a bulletin of earthquakes for the Yucca Flat region.  He/she will work with NNSS geologists to develop a velocity model for the region, incorporate the model into earthquake relocation algorithms, and re-locate events using University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) and NNSS seismic data to better understand the active tectonics in the region.  The goal would be for he/she to write a peer-reviewed paper that could also be used as part of a PhD dissertation.

    Large-N Data Acquisition

    • Candidate would assist NNSS seismologists in the fielding, deployment, maintenance, and operation of a Large-N system in Yucca Flat, NV.  The NNSS anticipates purchasing a 500-node system by summer and needs an experienced seismic data acquisition technician that could help setup the system, program the sensors, develop deployment and maintenance plans, collect, and archive data. He/she could possibly use the data for PhD level research if desired.  The project could lead to future work when the system is deployed either at the NNSS or elsewhere.
