  • Qualifications

     

    • Bachelor’s degree in Physics or in a calculus-based Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) field, and 5 years’ related experience in the field of charged particle accelerators.
    • Master's degree in Physics plus at least three years' relevant experience; or a Ph.D. in Physics preferred. 
    • Experience in theory and operation of linear induction accelerators preferred.
    • Experience using charged particle beam transport modeling and simulation software is desirable.
    • Should be self-motivated and able to complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
    • Ability to work in a team environment engaging a broad range of professional scientists, engineers, and technicians is required. 
    • Strong time-management skills, be well organized, maintain safe work habits and have a broad range of technical interests and education.
    • Must have demonstrated effective interpersonal skills to communicate with coworkers, customers, and management/supervisor along with the ability to follow oral and written instructions and established procedures.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required. The ability to read and understand work orders, technical manuals, software documentation, procedures, diagrams and illustrations, blueprints, schematics and other technical information is desirable. 
    • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

    Department of Energy Q clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, "Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites," will be conducted. Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, and subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter.  Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709, "Counterintelligence Evaluation Program."

     

    Eligibility Requirements - To obtain a clearance, an individual must be a U.S. citizen at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2, "Personnel Security."

    Responsibilities

    • Work closely with world-renowned experts in the field of linear induction accelerators (LIA) to design, fabricate, commission, and ultimately operate a new world class hydro-test facility at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS).
    • Initially this role will serve as mentee to these LIA experts while designing and fabricating the accelerator system.  Future possibilities for this role include taking a lead role in commissioning and bringing to operation the hydro-test facility at the NNSS.
    • Work with a team of experts in optimizing radiographic performance of the system and will conduct long-term research to continuously improve system performance and maintain applicability to future U.S. nuclear stockpile and global security needs.
