  • Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in a engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), and 5 years' related experience.
    • Preference will be given to applicants with a degree in electrical, systems, or mechanical engineering.  Some college level experience with hardware or systems design or integration is preferred. 
    • Ability to interpret codes and standards within the discipline in which they were hired.
    • Basic knowledge of MATLAB, Verilog HDL, PCB layout tools. 
    • Experience in digital and analog transistor-level design is a plus.
    • Familiar with software such as Word and Excel, have above average communication skills, and be interested in learning from the best and brightest in the fields of engineering. 


    Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted.  Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, and subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709, “Counterintelligence Evaluation Program.”


    Eligibility Requirements – To obtain a clearance, an individual must be a U.S. citizen at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2, “Personnel Security.”

    • MSTS has an opportunity at their Special Technologies Laboratory Santa Barbara, CA location for an engineer to support national security initiatives in the use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).
    • Support the integration of commercial of the shelf (COTs) and custom hardware on UAS’s of opportunity.
    • Support the design, layout, testing, and deployment of UAS payloads.
    • Will need to learn to use Solidworks-mechanical design, Altium-schematic capture and PCB layout, and situational awareness software.
    • Must be willing to participate in field experiments as part of the testing of the payloads.
    • The successful candidate will work on similar projects that are not related to UAS’s as needed.
