  • Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) and 2 years' related experience.
    • Preferred degrees in electrical, systems, or mechanical engineering. 
    • Some college level experience with hardware or systems design or integration preferred. 
    • Ability to interpret codes and standards within the discipline in which they were hired.
    • Basic knowledge of MATLAB, Verilog HDL, PCB layout tools. 
    • Familiar with software such as Word and Excel, have above average communication skills.  
    • Experience in digital and analog transistor-level design is a plus.


    Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted.  Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, and subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709, “Counterintelligence Evaluation Program.”


    Eligibility Requirements – To obtain a clearance, an individual must be a U.S. citizen at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2, “Personnel Security.”

    MSTS has an opportunity at their Special Technologies Laboratory Santa Barbara, CA location for an entry level engineer to support national security initiatives in the use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).


    Key Responsibilities:

    • Support the integration of commericial off the shelf (COTs) and custom hardware on UAS’s of opportunity.
    • Support the design, layout, testing, and deployment of UAS payloads.
    • Will need to learn to use Solidworks-mechanical design, Altium-schematic capture and Printed Circuit Board (PCB) layout, and situational awareness software.
    • Must be willing to participate in field experiments as part of the testing of the payloads.
    • Successful applicant will work on similar projects that are not related to UAS’s as needed.
    • Some travel will be required.
